Army Plan: Tyrants Legion 'Babab Defense Force'
Thursday, 11 November 2010
Lets Play Tyrant's Legion
That's the story of how I fell in love with the idea of doing Tyrants Legion.
Originally this post was meant to outline the list i'll be doing for this project thing, but thats gonna take some thinkin' out. What I DO know is that i've 80 Guardsmen standing around doing nothing and one of them needs shooting in the kneecaps.
*toddles off for 5 minutes*
Anyway, Tyrants Legion.
Cool story bro, apparently Huron meshed his Guard and (some) Astral Claws together in what has to be the most meh and money grabbing scheme GW has ever done.
Let me say something now - Yes, I have the Blood angels book. Yes, I have Space Wolves. Yes I have Imperial Guard. The problem I have with the book is... what if I didn't? Suddenly I become a sad sad person who wants to kill Jervis Johnson again, despite my restraining order. Why? Because theres not only no weapon summary (except from IA only units), but you also need to have Codex: SM to use the book. And believe me, i've no interest whatsoever in getting that pile of rotten sardines. ;)
Anyway, unit ideas:
- Corpse Taker: I can haz Bile? Using the Chirurgeon Backpack set on GW site to build the actual Apothecary bloke, with a dash of Flagellants + Flayed Ones + Spare Chirg arms OR Tech Servitors for £7 at FW = Vivisection Servitors. Imma thinkin' it might be good to start with the bare unit and see how it goes before I go up.
- Centurion: Thinking basic marine with Helmet Plume, Bare Chest, and as many weapons as possible. Tip for next time, FW? ALLOW ALL ASTRAL CLAW CHARACTERS IN THE TYRANT LEGION!!!!
- Retaliators: Thinking Iron Armour for them. Nuff Said
- Legion Cohort: ...
- Iron Hunters: Scythed Bikes it is!
- Marauders: Thinkin' these should be Flagellants (for Death Cult), Necromunda (for Scout guys), or Penal Legion (for anyone else). Might want to pick up a opened up Chimera for the transport...
My intention is to pretty much build one of every infantry/bike unit in the book, and then load up on metric craptons of tanks, to bring forward the Big Guns. Then, at the end of the project, it's Huron tiem.
The time has come for this corrupt land to be cleansed with redeeming fire...

Wow, Flashback tiem!
I'm not a painter. I'm not a memory... guy. I'm not a hobbyist... in a way. These are all reasons why I flitter between projects... that and the flies.
Another reason? Because something is always better.
Say, for instance... BABAB WAR!
Lamenters vs. Star Phantoms was a 2 week thing. Anyway, i've found something better, thanks to this week's From The Warp own Flashback (lol it's Flashback week. Next week, it's flashdance)... here: http://fromthewarp.blogspot.com/2010/11/tuesday-top-ten-91.html
Anyway... BOOM! http://thefallenprinces.blogspot.com/2010/11/badab-project.html
Meet Babab War Awesome Group of Awesomeness Complete With A Label no Jutsu (or BWAGA CWULJ... pronounce from the depth of your throat, bwah-aga, cuh-wuljuh)... Label no Jutsu being here...
So yeah... Babab War Project!
My intention is for this to be a side project to my other side projects, which are themselves aside glances from the big side project, y'know being PURE EVIL (and afraid of puppies, but thats beside the point)
So. What chapter... No, it's not Phantoms or Lamenters.
All about teh Astral Claws! Gonna go down to WHW to pick up the stuff I need for it - namely Huron (the decent model) and some of those armor packs. Gonna be a blast.

Army List: Flight of the Successors
The Blood Angels, despite all my raving in the poorly written review from Wednesday, are far too similar to C: SM for me to be able to hold interest in them. Back in December 2008 when I started a SM army I brought a Battle Company box (essentially) and was so overeager to assemble and such that I built and painted everything in Crimson Fists (and invested in Kantor and a full list) that I did not realise that it actually SUCKED at what I wanted it to do. Thus in the period of a month I chose to dump that list.
Then in October I invested in Space Wolves and, while less disappointing, it's difficult not to gag on the idea of doing a second Imperial SM army while i'm still in the middle of five Chaos ones and a 'Space Wolf' (I play Skyrar's Dark Wolves) one.
So this is a basic 2000 point list which is low on model count. No Special Characters yet I should note.
Flight of the Successors

Captain with Power Sword and Storm Shield. Jump Pack - 155

PROJECT: Torrent of Cheese*
One main complaint I have noticed over teh internetz is that various elements of the SW army is 'so broken'. Thunderwolves, JotWW, Rune Priests, cheap Troops, and so on. So, in search of this mythical cheese, I will be building up a large force over the next few months to test out the lengths that this hypothetical cheese actually goes to. In accordance with my strict 'plastic only' policy on SW, I will be converting as much of the stuff as possible from molten cheese... I mean, plastic.
HQ Choices
Space Wolves have 1-4 HQ choices, so for these I thought - hmm, what would fit into a Cheese based dairy army? My answer - Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf, Canis Wolfborn, and two Rune Priests on Foot.
For the purposes of Canis, I intend on using one of the various Mordheim options - either The Caller's rat thing, or the Watcher rat thing. Both are metal models, but they are damned better than the actual metal model! I will GS the fur and everything.
For the Rune Priests... a bit more simple. I will be basing the models upon my Njal in Rune Armour, and using various options available to me to help with this.
Troop Choices
Canis makes all Fenrisian Wolves into Troop Choices, so that means I have three to pick from. I will use 20 Wolves with 2 Cyberwolves as my two mandatories for now. For these wolves, I will use the direct plastics, to save time.
After I noticed I was a bit underpointed, I added two razorbacks with 10 Grey Hunters between them, as well as a Plasma Gun or two, to deal with some... new things (cough nids cough).
Fast Attack Choices
Apparently where the main regions of cheese lie. I will be purchasing 10 Thunderwolf Cavalry to serve as retinues to my two wolven HQs, and each will have a Storm Shield for added protection from damage.
I will be converting these from Sabretusks or something like that, methinks, unless I find something better to use.
The List - 1750pts
This is the list I intend on using at the moment:
HQ- Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf Mount, with Power Weapon and Bolt Pistol. Bears the Saga of the Beastslayer, a Wolf Tooth Necklace, and a Belt of Russ = 200
HQ- Canis Wolfborn, joined by two pet Fenrisian Wolves = 205
HQ- Rune Priest (Jaws of the World Wolf, Living Lightning) = 100
HQ- Rune Priest (Jaws of the World Wolf, Murderous Hurricane) = 100
Troops- 10 Fenrisian Wolves with 1 Cyberwolf = 88
Troops- 10 Fenrisian Wolves with 1 Cyberwolf = 88
Troops- 5 Grey Hunters with Plasma Gun and Razorback (Twin Linked Assault Cannon, Extra Armour) = 175
Troops- 5 Grey Hunters with Plasma Gun and Razorback (Twin Linked Assault Cannon, Extra Armour) = 175
Fast- 5 Thunderwolf Cavalry with 1 Storm Shield and Power Sword, as well as 1 Mark of the Wulfen = 300
Fast- 5 Thunderwolf Cavalry with 1 Storm Shield and Power Sword, as well as 1 Mark of the Wulfen = 300
The army is split into two flanks, if you will. Each flank is filled with the same units - 6 Thunderwolves, 10 Fenrisians, 5 Hunters, and 1 Rune Priest. Priests give Psychic protection, and their retinues give a bit of durability. That's it, really.
Now to begin building it... :P

My Sons Shall Destroy You All...
The key points of my army are obviously all Sacred Number based. For example, my plague marines total to 49 models. My Terminators focus force against the seven most important targets. My tanks must be prepared to fight seven at once. That sort of thing, really. Then there is the doctrine of the Death Guard - namely, the lack of Heavy weaponry, and the fact that they are a trench force. That is why my army is hard... and slow. Your assault units don't have any reason to come to me, and I have no reason to come to your assault units
But the army itself? I don't do images (yet) but I do enjoy making lists. This is the list of my models:
- Typhus the Traveller, Herald of Nurgle
- Chaos Sorcerer of Nurgle (FW model)
- 13 Terminator Champions of Nurgle (squads of 7)
- 7 Chosen of Nurgle (Melta support)
- 14 Possessed of Nurgle (Pray for FNP)
- 49 Plague Marines (including options for 5 Meltaguns, 5 Flamers, and 1 Plasma Gun)
- 4 Champions (1 PW/PP, 2 PF/PP, 1 PW/BP)
- 4 Bikers of Nurgle
- 10 Chaos Spawn
- 21 Havocs (That's 9 Missile Launchers, 2 Lascannons, 1 Heavy Bolter)
- 3 Possessed Vindicators (2 new, 1 old. Old one is Command Tank)
That's the stuff. I think it translates to at least a fair few points (lol). Should be interesting to field

Herald Highlight: And I looked down upon my new dominion... and I thought it good
Out of the long words (aww!) now. That's the key fact of the hobby, which will be covered in this highlight of the hobby. The first key fact to be covered in Hobby Academy Summer 2009. A new section on the site, I believe
It's the first thing we need to overcome each and every day that we take part in the hobby. That creeping feeling at the back of our heads... calling. Planetstrike looks pretty nice. Space Marines get reinforcements - you like that, remember! Don't give in!
Thats the point of every project, work in progress, plan, or army you will
So look for the signs. Listen for the pains. Consult your doctor for possible side effects. Remember to take the pills. This is one enemy you must defeat, by all costs!

Tactica: Building an Army
How the heck do you start an army?
Few things I look at for any army are the obvious ones - Army Play, Army Content, and Army Possibilities. You can't play any army that doesn't focus on these things, however soulless you are. That is, unless you're an android, or a guy with a grudge
But actually, there's 3 other factors people don't take into account - for example, a person I know began a Dark Elf army simply because of bad experiences with High Elves and bearing a big grudge. Sure, he likes the Army Play, Army Content, and the Army Possibilities, but he still absolutely loathes High Elves! It's the same with me - i'm starting a Wood Elf army soon in order to deal with my deep aggressive urges against a certain other Wood Elf player I know
But then, there's the other two factors. Those are the Public Opinion - which while not as important, you don't want to play an army that people turn their noses up at - and Painting Possibilities - since you don't want to do a really boring army, do you???
How the heck do you plan an army?
This is the stage that far more people already know firm images are needed at the start of any project... and in this case (my Isengard army) I chose to do the good old Phalanx army. My aim is to have 160 Uruks in my army at the end - just basic box sets, too. I've got 60 at the moment. These guys will form up blocks, Pikes in the main units, and sword-shield Uruks on the flanks. Obvious flanking force, but since it's a deathwish to even think about charging them it works. Then there's the Shaman conversions i'm doing - the metal ones are either too expensive or they're too inappropriate (think about it, you've got a naked guy, and there's a guy on a rock... awful)
I've also got a set of Trolls for the approach - Trolls are a cert in any evil army anyway, right? So there's going to be 4 in the army - 1 per Phalanx. Added to this is a final force of many Crossbows and Berserkers. For the coolness factor, thats all
Finally, the Epic Heroes? I suppose Lurtz should be used... But I don't like him anyway. So it's only Saruman and Grima for me (seeing as Thrysdan, the other guy, is the stupidest guy ever)
Anyway, thats an update and a badly made 'Tactica' in one. Sweet!

Beginning of the End
So, look at the link and you'll see a topic on how The End Is Nigh for the common 5th Ed player - that of the player who adapted 4th Ed with 5th Ed changes. So, how will you deal with it?

Warriors of Chaos: Update
Over the last 6 months (well, more than 6) I have been building up a vast chaos horde with which to (have some chance of) destroying my opponents. I have gained models, but unfortunately I have lost some models as well (Squiddy is no more =( )
However, here is the current list (of models):
Lord of Chaos upon Dragon
Exalted Hero upon Daemonic Steed
Exalted Hero of Khorne
Sorcerer of Nurgle
Sorcerer of Nurgle
14 Warriors of Nurgle
14 Warriors of Nurgle
10 Warriors of Khorne
10 Marauders
10 Marauders
10 Marauder Horsemen
10 Knights of Nurgle
10 Chosen of Khorne
6 Dragon Ogres
Warshrine of Khorne
Warshrine of Khorne
Imperial Guard Releases
What are the ones that you are most likely to use? Here's some rulings and points:
- Valkyrie: Flying, Drop Insertion, Chimera with Lascannon, One Shot Kraks (basic), for 100pts each
- Sentinel: 2 variants - one 12 AV Front, one scouting move through cover. Both plastic
- Command Squad: 50/30pt squads. Contains too many options =P
- Ratlings - Grots with Stealth, Infiltrate, and +1 BS. 10pts each
- Primaris Psyker: cheap. Has a 5+ Armour and Invun save. Good powers, to be honest
- Battleforce: 1 Troop choice
- Lord Commissar: Stubborn with 3 Wounds, 3 attacks, and re-rolls? Nice!
- Advisors: -1 to opponent reserves, +1 to your reserves, and a moving battle cannon. VERY cheap
So, here's a small list i'll be using:
- Company Command Squad with Lord Castellan Creed, Astropath, Master of the Fleet, and 2 Bodyguards. Veterans have Grenade Launcher, Regimental Standard, Medi Pack, Vox Caster, and Carapace Armour 305
- Company Command Squad with Jarran Kell, Astropath, Master of the Fleet, and 2 Bodyguards. Veterans have Regimental Standard, Carapace Armour, and Medi Pack 290
- Infantry Platoon with Command Squad (Standard, Medi Pack, Al'Rahem, and Vox Caster), 3 Infantry Squads (Probably Combined. Sergeants with Power Weapons. Grenade Launcher in each), 20 Conscripts (no upgrades) 425
- Infantry Platoon with Command Squad (Standard, Medi Pack, Al'Rahem, and Vox Caster), 3 Infantry Squads (Probably Combined. Sergeants with Power Weapons. Grenade Launcher in each), 20 Conscripts (no upgrades) 425
- Infantry Platoon with Command Squad (Standard, Medi Pack, Vox Caster), 3 Infantry Squads (Probably Combined. No upgrades) 230
- Veterans with Vox Caster
Total Points: 1745. Total Models: 173. Total Kill Points: Combined (11), Uncombined (17)
This is a basic list, that attempts to take advantage of the amount of models guard can field. Sure, it doesn't contain any tricks, but it does contain the Endless Horde (TM) of Guardsmen! And anyway, even if I do scrap the list i'll still keep the models (which Guard lists need anyway)
Thats me out!

Herald Highlight: Planning
I've spent far too long talking about things such as building armies and game systems yet i've never touched upon where we play with these. That's a bit foolish on my part. Before one can play they need to know about planning the board they will play on
At the moment I am planning a project on a gaming board - not a Games Workshop brand though. Here's the page it's from: http://www.giftsforgeeks.org.uk/ (or it should be, don't know at the mo, sorry). See the scenery and gaming board sections. Bunkers, segments, and GW items at a discount. Intriguing, I thought. It's also £20 a chuck when the GW board segments are £150 for 6 (or £25 a chuck). I can't afford that investment, so I instead chose this one instead
Good choice, no?
But how does one plan such a project? Thank god that this isn't a whole board in a whole piece, or it would become impossible to plan it. All one really needs to do with these sorts of segments is plan which ones they'll usually use and then work out a schedule for actually getting them! So in May i'll begin progress on a board with the first 4 x 2 board
Then, for the terrain
We all know about the Planetstrike rumours (I did a bit on combining Apocalypse with it I think) and we all know what the next army is (Imperial Guard, fool!) so what would be appropriate to get? I'm thinking something on the line of multiple bunkers and stuff like that, so that we have some defensive things to play over. I'm also thinking about getting a load of Manufactorum box sets from GW and building them into a single ruined factory, to give me something to strike onto! The Emperor protects... just not from Nuclear waste!
Anyway, this should be a fun project, and a fun plan to fulfill. I'll post in 2 weeks the progress i've made in another highlight, but until then i've got to go. Cheers for reading
~ If you want a specific topic Highlighted on, then please make a comment and i'll try to plan one out for you... wait, we plan? Anyway, see you soon. Herald

PROJECT: Lamenter Strike Force
But dammit, we can try!! So how about a good old Army Plan to think about how the devil i'll be doing it...
Search our archives for the post 'Star Phantoms vs Lamenters' for a bit of fluff on the Lamenter Chapter, before you even think about reading this. It really would help with understanding some of the 'fluff' (well, barely) for the army
Lamenters are unlucky, so i'll use this to choose some traits for my unit choices:
- Librarians: Even if they're used as just generic marines, it would feel appropriate for the chapter to attempt to negate some of the bad points of the chapter - Librarians can (or could) do this, so i'll include them. Thats in addition to the whole 'i'm a close combat monster in robes' thing
- Scouts: There will likely be more coming into the chapter than there are coming out. Why? Cmon, they're so unlucky that they'll probably need vast amounts of reserves to have a chance of surviving!
- Land Raider Variants: Land Raiders are very defensive, and who wouldn't want to have a higher chance of surviving the Unlucky factor? Not me...
So, here's the plan at the moment:
Chapter Master with Terminator Armour, Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield, Auxilary Grenade Launcher, and Teleport Homer. Accompanied by 5 Honour Guard, including Chapter Champion with Thunder Hammer, Chapter Banner, and many normal guard
Epistolary with Terminator Armour and Twin Linked Bolter
10 Tactical Marines in Drop Pod. Includes Flamer and Heavy Bolter. Sergeant with Teleport Homer and Combi Flamer. Drop Pod has Deathwind Missiles and Teleport Homer
10 Tactical Marines in Drop Pod. Includes Flamer and Heavy Bolter. Sergeant with Teleport Homer and Combi Flamer. Drop Pod has Deathwind Missiles and Teleport Homer
10 Tactical Marines in Drop Pod. Includes Flamer and Heavy Bolter. Sergeant with Teleport Homer and Combi Flamer. Drop Pod has TL Bolter and Teleport Homer
10 Tactical Marines in Drop Pod. Includes Flamer and Heavy Bolter. Sergeant with Teleport Homer and Combi Flamer. Drop Pod has TL Bolter and Teleport Homer
10 Scouts. Includes 8 Snipers, Camo Cloaks, Missile Launcher, and Sergeant Pasc (Telion)

10 Assault Marines with Jump Packs. Includes 1 Flamer. Sergeant with Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield (?)

5 Combat Terminators with Lightning Claws. Ride within Land Raider Crusader

Herald Highlight: Projects
So without further ado, let's start the piece on Projects...
Huzzah for projects!
Projects vaster than vast, more delicious than that glorious internet dessert, Pie!
Do they not give purpose to even the most patient hobbyist? Do they not reward the grinding, no matter how fast or slow?
Ok, I must say that many of the people down at my FLGS think of me as a rushing rhino, as the complete opposite of my god, Nurgle. I am who I am. I don't LIKE doing things slow. It's a bit like the Eldar Apocalypse Army i'm going to be building up over the next few months.
I like doing the majority of the work on each project in the initial 2 months. It becomes fresh in my mind, it isn't just a filtered set of thoughts! Speed has its rewards, it has its praises. But at the same time, I understand how a certain Jolly Stefanic enjoys doing it slower. Because speed has its own disadvantages
Mainly, for me, it is my focus
I can build and paint 2000pt armies (ok, badly) in a matter of perhaps a week. I can spend loads on an army and then finish it before, truly, it has begun. This leaves me with a problem - what do I do in the gap between the start and end of an army? Do I attempt to improve upon it, perhaps ending up having to scrap a scheme to keep it consistant, or do I simply attempt to make lists for it, to deal with all enemies?
I HAVE to settle for the option of making lists! I don't particularly have a need for perfection. I LOVE to have things 'done'! It's WHY I rush. Why should I change this because someone doesn't like the idea of completing projects - which 'are supposed to be completed over long periods, not short'?
I have no idea. Did this just change from a matter of my preferences on projects, to a rant at those who DON'T want to do it?
Strangest thing... isn't it? My project at the moment seems to be the art of ranting
Here's your link to Bell of Lost Souls. And seriously, I enjoy writing articles but if you read them, you can COMMENT on them! Cookies to those who do!

Sons of Arkhan
I essentially think of this as a Renegade Chapter, with Pre-Heresy technology. Thus I will use a combo of Codex and Evil Marine books - based around the Babab War campaign coming soon from Bell of Lost Souls
Current forces:
- Sorcerer Darro Trenai, Acolyte of Arkhan (Parts)
- 16 Khorne Berserkers (GS)
- 28 Plague Marines (GS)
- Invictus, the Fellsword (Fellblade/Stormsword variant)
